Passive Protection Against UAV Impact, Falling Objects & High-Energy Debris
Fusion Engineering develops engineered passive physical protection systems for critical oil & gas, petrochemical, energy, utility and industrial assets.
Our solutions create a physical protective barrier between critical assets and external hazards such as UAV/drone impact, falling or moving objects, flying debris and fragmentation.
Critical infrastructure requires protection against a wide range of external physical hazards.
Fusion Engineering’s passive protection systems use high-strength flexible mesh, engineered support structures and controlled stand-off distances to create a protective layer around or above critical assets.
Unlike active counter-UAV systems, our approach provides a permanent physical protection layer without relying on electronic detection, jamming or interception systems.
Key Features
Passive Protection — Permanent physical protection without active electronic interception
Engineered Stand-Off — Protection positioned away from the asset to reduce the likelihood of direct impact.
Energy Absorption — Flexible mesh and supporting systems are designed to deform and distribute impact loads.
Project-Specific Design — Each system is engineered according to the asset, threat and site conditions.
Our Protection Technologies
Storage Tank & Facility Protection — Passive protection systems for storage tanks, process facilities, pump stations, substations and other critical industrial installations.
Cross-Country Pipeline Protection — Suspended mesh protection systems for selected high-risk sections of oil, gas, water and product pipeline corridors.
Multi-Hazard Passive Protection
UAV / Drone Impact — Physical interception intended to prevent direct contact with critical equipment.
Moving & Falling Objects — Protection against project-defined objects approaching the protected zone.
Flying Debris — Flexible mesh can provide an interception barrier against defined debris sizes and energies.
Fragmentation / Shrapnel — Specialized mesh arrangements can be evaluated for secondary-fragment interception based on the project threat assessment.
Wind-Borne Objects — An additional physical barrier against debris generated during severe weather events.
When an external moving object reaches the protective envelope, the flexible mesh system is intended to intercept the object and deform in a controlled manner. The resulting load is distributed through the mesh, cables and support structure while maintaining separation between the impact event and the protected asset.
Engineered for the Specific Asset and Threat
Every protection system is customized around the geometry, operating requirements and environmental conditions of the existing asset.
Fusion Engineering can support projects from initial feasibility through implementation, providing concept development, engineering, fabrication and installation support.
Performance-Based Protection
Protection capability is performance-based. There is no single mesh specification capable of guaranteeing protection against every UAV, projectile, fragment or explosive event.
For each project, Fusion Engineering establishes a defined Design Threat Envelope, followed by structural and dynamic engineering.
Where explosive effects are specified, blast and fragmentation performance require dedicated specialist assessment and, where necessary, validated analysis or testing.
